Design with nature is a key premise in thetopographical arts (architecture, landscape, and urbanism). Natural elements, water, hills, horizons, air etc., play important roles in this proposition. In2014 the SEU School of Architecture and the CAA School of Architecture hosted aconference called Water Brought to Life. This next conference will address mountains, water’s complementaryelement (shan shui). Today, landscapesand buildings are often understood scenographically. Our aim is to enrich this conception byconsidering how mountains are linked to mental life, and give rise to spatialideas. This is obvious when traditionalgardens, paintings, buildings and poetry are considered. Might it also be true for modern andcontemporary work, in Asia and the West, if not directly then by analogy, inview of broader themes: movement, scenery, mapping, and materials?
The papers and discussions of the conference will address four key topics:
1. Mountain Materials :the apparent and implicit qualities of rock, water, and vegetation, as they give terrain structure, palpable substance, vocabulary, and associated meanings
2. Mountain Journeys :spatial configurations particular to this type of topography, the kinds of movement associated with mountain space, and the kinds of bodily knowledge that mountain landscapes develop
3. Mountain Scenery :the particular kind and structure of views or prospects in this type of terrain, the kinds of depth and distance in mountainous topography
4. Mountain Mapping :the formation of landscape knowledge, as it develops in this type of terrain, the role of map making, of surveying, and other types of recording
