Notes on the Renovation of Phoenix Plaza
LOCATION: Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China
PROJECT OWNER: Phoenix Publishing & Media Group
DESIGNER: Ma Jin, Pu Zhou, Liu Peixin
PROFILE: Located at the junction of Hunan Road and the Central Road in Nanjing, stands a red brick building also known as the Phoenix Plaza which is an important landmark in Nanjing that constructed 30 years before. With the rapid increase of business centers in the city, the Phoenix Plaza can't meet the needs of today's citizens, and requires a thorough renovation.
The architects try to artificially repair and implant something new into it to link up the old interface, so that it could be shown as a brand new building. With this as an opportunity, they discuss the rules on how to overcome the shackles of function and space under the low cost control projects of commercial plaza, and as a result, to achieve the aesthetic breakthrough.
