In the early years, large-scale limestone mining left a magnificent landscape in Qinglongshan Park.
The main space of the multifunction hall is as large as four basketball courts. The prestressed reinforced concrete technology solves the span of 38m. The one-story building mass is wrapped by local terracotta plates providing functional rooms. Fair-faced concrete and dark red ceramic represent two types of mineral resources, limestone and purple clay, which have been preserved in the local area and have supported the region's production and life for a long time. By the way of combining the massive structure with several ordinary single-story buildings, the multifunction hall reflects the unique urban spatial phenomenon in the process of urbanization in China, which is the conflict and coexist of the massive structures of infrastructure( like elevated highway) that constructed for urban upgrading with the residential buildings in material, structure, construction, and scale. That brings a sense of density, hierarchy, and urbanism into the site.
The multifunction hall has a clear height of 9m, of which 2.7m below the ground. On the one hand, it is to control the height and scale of the building in the context, on the other hand, the reappearing of the “excavation” work is an important way to obtain space. Finally, the horizontal, calm profile of the roof complements the silhouette of hills and urban buildings.
