 Course Description ∣ 课程描述 

This course will argue a simple thesis: that the spaces of our lives record the stories of our lives.  Architecture and literature will be studied, through built works and texts, the latter from both author-architects and fiction writers (novelists, short story writers, and poets).  Urban settings throughout the world will occupy our attention, in Berlin, New York, Paris, Milan, London, Venice, Vienna, Chicago, and Shanghai.

In much the same way that literacy is both cultivated and preserved in books, cultural memory obtains legible shape in buildings, persisting as long as they do.  In a time when so much in life seems in flux – social norms, family structures, political allegiances, and so on – the power of architecture to give practical affairs orientation and stability is especially important.  This course will study how architectural settings provide palpable structure for the events of our lives, particularly those events that occur in cities and their institutions, for cities have always been and remain culture’s most efficient and eloquent articulation.

就像读写能力在书本中得以建立并维持,文化记忆则在建筑物中获得可以辨识的形式,并绵延长久。当生活中的方方面面,无论是社会规范、家庭结构,还是政治信仰,都似乎变动不羁,建筑更显其贵,因为它仍能赋予生活实践以方向和一定程度上的恒定。这门课程将研究城市建筑如何为生活事件——尤其是发生在城市及其机构中的那些事件——建立可被感知的结构,因为古往今来,城市都是对文化最有效且最传神的表达。

Unlike literature, film, or advertising, architecture performs its signifying role rather quietly and unobtrusively; but this fact does not diminish its capacity to allow us to feel “at home” in many and varied settings.  This will be clear to non-architects as soon as they reflect on the role played by domestic arrangements, for even the most prosaic events cannot unfold unless the settings in which they are to occur are “in order.”  Less clear perhaps, but no less important is the role that architecture plays in our understanding and experience of community, civility, and the common good. 

与文学、电影或广告不同,建筑承担其表意职能的方式悄然而低调;但它让我们在众多且各异的场景中寻获“归属”的能力却并没有因此减弱。对于非建筑师的普通大众而言,前述这一点再显明不过:只需回想一下在居家生活中,家具等物件的布置所起作用便能明白,因为假如这种摆放不能“恰如其分”,则即便是最庸常之事也断无可能正常展开。与这种日常生活相比,在人们对公共性事务与价值——如共同体的塑造、文明的达成以及共同利益的维护——的理解与体会方面,建筑起到的影响或许并非那么直接与显明,但是其重要程度则未减分毫。

The course will look at a number of cities in Europe, the USA, and China.  To make the volume of study materials manageable, we will concentrate on developments in the last hundred to hundred and fifty years.  The writings of author architects will provide us with some insight into the ways architecture has served a “narrative” function in these cities, but we will also read stories, poems, and parts of novels that augment and enrich those architectural accounts.  The idea is that stories about spaces will clarify the ways that spaces are stories.

本课程将着眼于一众欧洲、美国和中国的城市。为了让研习的材料可以驾驭,我们将专注于过去一百到一百五十年间的城市发展。作者建筑师的写作会让我们了解建筑如何在这些城市中发挥“叙事”的功能,但我们也会阅读故事、诗歌以及小说节选,这些将会扩充和丰富那些建筑类描述。目的在于展现,有关空间的故事,恰恰可能澄清空间通向故事之诸路径。

Prof. David Leatherbarrow

戴维·莱瑟巴罗 教授


Professor David Leatherbarrow is a scholar and professor in the theory and history of architecture, with specific emphasis on their contribution to architectural design. He teaches in the Internationalization Demonstration School of Architecture, Southeast University. Since 1984 he has also been teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. Within history, theory, and design, he is known internationally for his contributions to ideas and historical developments of architectural design, gardens and landscapes, and, most recently, on the impact of contemporary technology on architecture. All of David Leatherbarrow’s work in scholarship examines two essential problems or topics in architectural design: the architectural site (landscape or urban) and architectural construction. These two topics are unavoidably commonplace in contemporary design practice. They are also in need of reconsideration, in light of changes in contemporary culture and society. To date David Leatherbarrow has published 12 scholarly books and over one hundred and twenty scholarly articles. In addition to his scholarship, Leatherbarrow is highly respected internationally as an educator, having won numerous awards for his teaching, the most recent of which is the 2020 Topaz Medallion awarded by AIA/ACSA, the highest honor given to an educator in architecture.

莱瑟巴罗教授是世界著名的建筑历史与理论家,他的历史与理论研究尤为强调它们对设计的贡献。莱瑟巴罗教授现任教于东南大学建筑,自1984年起也在宾夕法尼亚大学任教。在历史、理论、设计领域,他的学术声誉源自他在建筑设计、园林与景观的观念与历史发展方面做出的贡献,以及近年来他在当代技术进展对建筑学影响方面的研究。他的所有著作都集中探讨建筑学科的两个基本问题:建筑场所(景观或城市)和建筑建造。它们既是建筑实践中的两个基本问题,也是今天需要予以关注并重新思考的重要领域。迄今莱瑟巴罗教授共出版了12部学术著作和120多篇学术文章。在学术研究以外,莱瑟巴罗教授还是国际知名的教育家,曾获多个教育奖项,最近的奖项包括全美建筑教育最高奖“2020年度黄玉奖章”。
