Faculty Seminar: Teaching and Research in Theory and History in a Design School

December 30, 2019-January 7, 2020

Lecture Hall, 5th Floor of South Qiangongyuan, SEU/IDS

Seminar Leader: David Leatherbarrow

The aim of seminar is to introduce, discuss, and reflect on approaches to teaching that seek to bind key subjects of the architecture discipline together, while deepening understanding of one or another of those subjects. Among the several subjects that could be considered, three will receive attention in these seminar meetings: design, history, and theory. The basic question is simple, though two-part: what manner of teaching can instruct in one of these subjects while demonstrating to students (as well as other professors and oneself) how that subject bears upon others. The seminar is intended for faculty and Ph.D. students in related fields of study. Each meeting will be two-part: one or two 40-60 minute lecture(s) by professor(s) followed by an open discussion moderated by the seminar leader, who will also give three talks, intended to introduce the subject area and today's challenges and opportunities.
