The Avant-garde and Architecture

The course will explore three key concepts of contemporary design – Form, Programme and Space – as emerging and developing through the experience of the 20th century, setting up frameworks of design ideas and practice. These concepts are understood, not as static, but as products of moments of rapid transformation in architecture, by focusing on two such moments: the Soviet avant-gardes of the 1920s-30s, and the Western neo-avant-gardes of the 1960s-70s claiming direct inspiration from the former. These two moments have many differences and similarities. Both faced a sudden loss of pre-established programmes, and responded by developing formal innovation in a way close to laboratorial experimentation; both reconstructed a relationship to programme in which it was no longer a mere imposition from a client (individual or social), but part of the field of architectural creativity; and both then tested their new expanded set of design tools and concerns on a new reality, moving from Art, to Architecture, to the City. The course will examine how, in ways similar to how key agents of the Western neo-avant-gardes were influenced by the Soviet avant-garde, contemporary practice is in many ways still defined by frameworks of design thought defined by such concepts. And it will stimulate students to reflect on how they are present in both the architecture they study, and in their own design work.
