Founded in 1927, the School of Architecture at Southeast University (SEU-ARCH) started as the Department of Architecture of National Central University. It is the cradle of modern architectural education in China.
Famous Chinese architects and architectural educators, such as Professor YANG Tingbao, LIU Dunzhen, and TONG Jun have been teaching here for a long time. They made significant contributions to the development of architecture and architectural education in China. Today, A total of 123 faculty members and 25 staff members are teaching and conducting research at SEU-ARCH. Many of them are renowned scholars such as Professor QI Kang, Professor ZHONG Xunzheng, and Professor CHENG Taining, all being members of Chinese Academy of Science or Chinese Academy of Engineering.
SEU-ARCH offers 6 academic programs, namely Architecture, Architectural History and Heritage Conservation, Architectural Science and Technology, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Fine Arts. More than 800 undergraduate students and 600 Master and Ph.D. students are studying at SEU-ARCH. In the latest National Academic Program Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2012, the programs of Architecture (including Architectural History and Heritage Conservation and Architectural Science and Technology), Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning are ranked 2, 2, and 3 in China, respectively. Overall SEU-ARCH is one of the most prestigious architectural schools in the nation.
SEU-ARCH has been active in international exchange programs. In the academic year of 2012-2013, more than 30 professors and architects from North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan visited the school and taught 10 credited courses and 12 joint design studios to our students. There are currently 90 international students from 26 countries studying at SEU-ARCH. International conferences, forums, and workshops are held at SEU-ARCH regularly.
To further the research in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture, SEU-ARCH is committed to establish and improve interdisciplinary research labs. The Key Laboratory of Urban and Architectural Heritage Conservation, supervised by Ministry of Education, is such an example. Founded in 2009, it is the leading research center in China focusing on urban and architectural heritage. Professors and researchers from SEU-ARCH, the School of Material Science, the School of Civil Engineering, etc. are involved. In addition, SEU-ARCH has 3 other research labs including the Laboratory of Building Physics, the Laboratory of Digital Landscape, and the Laboratory of Architectural Algorithms and Application.
SEU-ARCH is proud of our thousands of alumni who are contributing in different ways to designing and building a better world. Our distinguished alumni include five members of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Pritzker Award winner, and more than ten National Design Masters.
